DDDesigns
These are economical plans for building plywood craft, including kayaks, canoes, and dinghies.
Each of the smaller designs is built from just two standard size, 2440 x 1220 mm, sheets of plywood, from 3 mm to 6 mm thick depending upon the design. The construction methods used are compounded (tortured) plywood (DK plans) which gives a round bilge cross section, or stitch and tape (DD plans), where ply panels are first stitched together using monofilament fishing line, or copper wire. The seams are then sealed with glass-fibre tape impregnated with either epoxy or polyester resin. The resulting craft is both light and tough. Where much abrasion is anticipated the exterior can be clad with a thin laminate of glass-fibre scrim and resin. No boat building skill, nor even woodworking experience is necessary; if you can measure and use a saw and hammer you can build one of these designs from our plans. We are occasionally asked if we supply full-size plans for canoe & kayak hull panel shapes. We don't because it is both easier, and more accurate to mark out the shapes directly on to the plywood sheets rather than trying to handle long pieces of paper, which may also change shape slightly according to the weather.
No jigs or moulds are required; all your work goes into making your actual boat.
Prices of plans & building instructions range from £24.00 (UK) for the DK8 junior kayak to £43.00 (UK) for the DK24 'Blues Trio' trimaran.
